Definition
The BUN/creatinine ratio divides blood urea nitrogen by creatinine from the same draw. It is calculated, not a new assay.
Why it matters
A higher ratio can hint at dehydration or extra protein load; a lower one can hint at low protein intake or other kidney patterns. The raw creatinine and eGFR still lead.
When it reads low
A lower ratio can follow low protein intake or a rise in creatinine relative to urea. It is a prompt, not a diagnosis.
When it reads high
A higher ratio often appears with a short-term fluid deficit or a high-protein stretch. Confirm how you felt and what you ate before the draw.
Questions for a clinician
01
Could I have been dry the morning of the draw?
02
Does the raw creatinine worry you more than this ratio?
03
What would you want the pair to do on the next test?
