What Direct Bilirubin measures
Direct (conjugated) bilirubin is the fraction the liver has processed for excretion. Total bilirubin is the sum of this fraction and the unconjugated remainder.

Why it matters
How clinicians usually read it
Splitting total bilirubin tells a clinician whether a rise is more about conjugation/excretion or about upstream production. SiPhox and the Tasso+ chemistry list both include it.
When it reads low
A lower value can mean
A lower direct bilirubin is the usual quiet pattern and is rarely a problem on its own.
When it reads high
A higher value can mean
A higher direct bilirubin points toward a conjugation or excretion issue and needs the rest of the liver panel, not a single-marker conclusion.
