Definition

What eGFR measures

Estimated glomerular filtration rate converts creatinine, age, and sex into an estimate of how many milliliters of blood the kidneys filter per minute. It is calculated, not directly measured.

Why it matters

How clinicians usually read it

It is the number kidney health is staged and tracked by, and it shapes medication dosing decisions. Trends across draws matter more than one value.

When it reads low

A lower value can mean

A lower eGFR suggests reduced filtration — but hydration, recent exercise, and muscle mass can all pull the estimate down temporarily. Persistent reduction deserves clinical review.

When it reads high

A higher value can mean

A high eGFR is usually not a problem in itself. In people with low muscle mass the formula can overestimate true filtration.

Questions for a clinician

Bring the number into a real conversation

01

Is my eGFR stable across draws, or trending down?

02

Could hydration or muscle mass be skewing this estimate for me?

03

Would a urine albumin check add useful kidney context?
