What Estradiol measures
Estradiol is the most active estrogen. In men it is made largely by converting testosterone via aromatase; in women it follows the ovarian cycle. Bone, brain, and vessels all use it.

Definition
Estradiol is the most active estrogen. In men it is made largely by converting testosterone via aromatase; in women it follows the ovarian cycle. Bone, brain, and vessels all use it.
Why it matters
It completes the androgen picture: symptoms attributed to testosterone sometimes track estradiol instead, and bone health depends on adequate levels in everyone.
When it reads low
A low estradiol can affect bone density, mood, and libido. In men it can accompany very low body fat or aromatase-blocking substances; in women, cycle timing matters first.
When it reads high
A higher estradiol in men often tracks body fat and aromatization, and rises with testosterone therapy. In women, interpretation depends entirely on cycle phase or menopause status.
Questions for a clinician
01
Was this assay sensitive enough for my situation, and when was it drawn?
02
How should estradiol be read next to my testosterone and SHBG?
03
Is anything I take affecting aromatization either direction?
