Definition

What Folate measures

Folate (vitamin B9) is required to make DNA and red blood cells. Serum folate reflects recent intake more than long-term stores.

Why it matters

How clinicians usually read it

SiPhox and the Tasso+ evaluation list both include it. Read with B12 and the CBC on Complete; a low folate can look like a B12 problem until both are measured.

When it reads low

A lower value can mean

A lower folate can follow low intake, alcohol, malabsorption, or pregnancy demand. The CBC and B12 complete the picture.

When it reads high

A higher value can mean

A higher folate usually reflects supplements or diet. It does not correct an untreated B12 deficiency and can mask it on a blood count.

Questions for a clinician

Bring the number into a real conversation

01

Should this be read with my B12 and CBC together?

02

Is a serum folate enough, or do you want a red-cell folate later?

03

Could a supplement be hiding a B12 issue?
