Why it matters
How clinicians usually read it
It is the usual laboratory window into ovarian reserve and one half of the LH/FSH pair used in hormone workups.
When it reads low
A lower value can mean
A lower FSH can reflect pituitary quieting, a follicular-phase draw, or suppression from hormones or illness.
When it reads high
A higher value can mean
A higher FSH commonly rises toward menopause or with primary gonadal failure. One value still needs cycle context.
