What HDL Cholesterol measures
HDL cholesterol is the cholesterol carried on high-density lipoproteins. HDL particles participate in reverse cholesterol transport, but a higher HDL number is not automatically protective.

Definition
HDL cholesterol is the cholesterol carried on high-density lipoproteins. HDL particles participate in reverse cholesterol transport, but a higher HDL number is not automatically protective.
Why it matters
It helps complete the lipid pattern. Very low or unusually high HDL can flag metabolic, inflammatory, or genetic context that LDL alone misses.
When it reads low
Low HDL often travels with high triglycerides, insulin resistance, or low activity. Raising HDL as a lone target is less useful than improving the whole metabolic pattern.
When it reads high
High HDL is not always better. Extremely high values can be genetic and do not cancel an elevated ApoB or Lp(a).
Questions for a clinician
01
Does my HDL fit an insulin-resistance pattern with triglycerides?
02
Should we treat the metabolic pattern rather than chase a higher HDL?
03
Is there a reason this HDL is unusually high or low for me?
