Definition
Hematocrit is the percentage of blood volume occupied by red blood cells. It moves with red-cell count and hydration status.
Why it matters
It confirms the hemoglobin story and adds a viscosity angle: very high hematocrit thickens blood, which is why some conditions and therapies monitor it closely.
When it reads low
A low hematocrit tracks with anemia or overhydration. It is interpreted with hemoglobin and the red-cell indices rather than alone.
When it reads high
A high hematocrit often reflects dehydration first; smoking, altitude, testosterone therapy, and sleep apnea are other common drivers worth reviewing.
Questions for a clinician
01
Was I well-hydrated at this draw?
02
Is anything in my routine — altitude, smoking, therapy — pushing this up?
03
At what level would you consider it a viscosity concern?
