Definition

What HOMA-IR measures

HOMA-IR multiplies fasting insulin by fasting glucose and scales the product. It is derived from the venous pair and is not available on the Tasso+ Essential panel.

Why it matters

How clinicians usually read it

Glucose can look acceptable while insulin is already working hard. HOMA-IR is the clinic calculation that puts those two Complete markers on one scale.

When it reads low

A lower value can mean

A lower HOMA-IR usually means less fasting insulin demand for the observed glucose. It is context, not a diagnosis of insulin sensitivity.

When it reads high

A higher value can mean

A higher HOMA-IR suggests more insulin is required to hold fasting glucose. Fasting status, illness, and assay differences all move it.

Questions for a clinician

Bring the number into a real conversation

01

Is this HOMA-IR high because of insulin, glucose, or both?

02

How should I read it next to my TG/HDL ratio and C-peptide?

03

What change would you want to see before the next venous draw?
