Definition
Serum iron measures the iron traveling through blood bound to transferrin at the moment of collection. It swings with meals, time of day, and recent supplements.
Why it matters
Alone it is noisy; with TIBC and saturation it becomes the standard iron-studies set that separates deficiency, overload, and inflammation effects.
When it reads low
A low serum iron can reflect true deficiency or the body sequestering iron during inflammation. Ferritin and saturation sort the two.
When it reads high
A high serum iron can follow a recent supplement dose or, less commonly, an overload condition. Repeat fasting values and saturation add clarity.
Questions for a clinician
01
Did I take an iron supplement in the day before this draw?
02
How do my ferritin and saturation frame this value?
03
Is a fasting morning repeat worth doing before conclusions?
