What Iron Saturation measures

Transferrin (iron) saturation is serum iron divided by total iron-binding capacity, expressed as a percentage. It shows how loaded the transport system actually is.

Why it matters

How clinicians usually read it

It is the ratio that catches what single values miss: persistently high saturation is a primary screen for hereditary iron overload, and low saturation supports true deficiency.

When it reads low

A lower value can mean

A low saturation supports iron deficiency or iron being withheld during inflammation. Ferritin and hs-CRP on this panel complete the picture.

When it reads high

A higher value can mean

A persistently high saturation is a reason to discuss hereditary hemochromatosis screening with a clinician, especially with any family history.
