Definition

What LDL Cholesterol measures

LDL cholesterol estimates the cholesterol mass inside low-density lipoprotein particles. Those particles can enter artery walls; the cholesterol number is a proxy, not a particle count.

Why it matters

How clinicians usually read it

It is the most familiar atherogenic marker. ApoB still answers how many particles are present, which can diverge from LDL cholesterol.

When it reads low

A lower value can mean

Lower LDL cholesterol is often the intended direction after lifestyle or medication changes. Very low values should still be interpreted with the full clinical picture.

When it reads high

A higher value can mean

Higher LDL cholesterol can increase atherosclerotic risk, especially when ApoB or Lp(a) is also elevated. Family history and metabolic context change how urgently it is treated.

Questions for a clinician

Bring the number into a real conversation

01

Is this LDL cholesterol aligned with my ApoB, or do the two disagree?

02

Should we look at calculated versus direct LDL given my triglycerides?

03

What follow-up or additional markers would change the plan?
