Definition

What Magnesium measures

Serum magnesium is the small circulating fraction of total body magnesium. Most magnesium lives inside cells, so the blood number can look quiet while stores are low.

Why it matters

How clinicians usually read it

Tasso+ liver-chemistry work showed magnesium concordance on centrifuged capillary serum. It is a standard chemistry add-on next to calcium and phosphate.

When it reads low

A lower value can mean

A lower magnesium can follow GI loss, diuretics, alcohol, or poor intake. Symptoms and medications matter more than a small dip.

When it reads high

A higher value can mean

A higher magnesium is less common and can follow supplements or reduced kidney clearance. Confirm kidney function before reacting to one value.

Questions for a clinician

Bring the number into a real conversation

01

Is this low enough, with my symptoms, to treat?

02

Could a medication or alcohol be wasting magnesium?

03

Should we also look at potassium and kidney function?
