Definition

What MMP-9 measures

Matrix metalloproteinase-9 is an enzyme that can loosen vessel-wall matrix and let inflammatory compounds into tissues. Shoemaker protocols treat it as a hidden-cytokine readout.

Why it matters

How clinicians usually read it

White cells dump MMP-9 into a sitting tube; the value can double in 30 minutes at room temperature. The draw has to be pre-chilled, spun, and frozen. Tasso+ mail-back cannot do that.

When it reads low

A lower value can mean

A lower MMP-9 is closer to the published quiet band. It is still read with TGF-β1 and C4a.

When it reads high

A higher value can mean

A higher MMP-9 can mark cytokine-driven release — or a tube that sat. Handling quality is part of the result.

Questions for a clinician

Bring the number into a real conversation

01

Was this pre-chilled, spun, and frozen immediately?

02

How does MMP-9 move with my TGF-β1 and symptoms?

03

Is this a protocol-step check or a first diagnostic panel?
