Definition
Serum phosphate (phosphorus) is the circulating inorganic phosphorus used in bone, energy chemistry, and acid-base balance.
Why it matters
Tasso+ chemistry studies included phosphorus with good concordance on centrifuged samples. It is read with calcium, kidney function, and parathyroid context.
When it reads low
A lower phosphate can follow refeeding, vitamin D issues, or certain medications. One low value still needs the rest of the mineral panel.
When it reads high
A higher phosphate often tracks with reduced kidney clearance or excess intake. Creatinine and eGFR belong in the same conversation.
Questions for a clinician
01
Is this phosphate explained by my kidney numbers?
02
Should calcium and vitamin D be read with it?
03
Is this a one-off or a trend you want to follow?
