What TC/HDL Ratio measures
The total-cholesterol-to-HDL ratio divides total cholesterol by HDL cholesterol. It is a calculated proportion, not a new measurement, and condenses the balance of the lipid panel into one number.

Why it matters
How clinicians usually read it
The ratio adds proportion to the raw numbers: the same total cholesterol reads differently with a high HDL than with a low one. It is context, not a stand-alone verdict.
When it reads low
A lower value can mean
A lower ratio usually reflects a more favorable balance between total cholesterol and HDL. It still does not override an elevated ApoB or Lp(a).
When it reads high
A higher value can mean
A higher ratio often travels with insulin resistance or a low HDL. It is a prompt to look at the underlying markers rather than a diagnosis by itself.
