Definition
Transforming growth factor beta-1 is a cytokine involved in immune regulation and tissue remodeling. Shoemaker protocols treat it as a core CIRS marker.
Why it matters
It requires platelet-poor EDTA plasma, multi-spin within minutes, and a frozen send-out. A mailed Tasso+ tube will falsely elevate it. Complete is a venous clinic draw for this reason.
When it reads low
A lower TGF-β1 is closer to the quiet published band used in CIRS workups. It is still read as part of a pattern, not a single-marker all-clear.
When it reads high
A higher TGF-β1 is a hallmark CIRS pattern when the specimen was handled correctly. Values far above the usual assay ceiling often mean platelets were left in the sample.
Questions for a clinician
01
Was this drawn as platelet-poor plasma and frozen the way the lab requires?
02
How does this sit with C4a, MMP-9, and MSH?
03
Is this a number you treat, or a mishandled tube we should repeat?
