Definition
Total cholesterol is the combined amount of cholesterol carried in the blood by LDL, HDL, and other lipoproteins. It is a headline number, not a complete cardiovascular picture on its own.
Why it matters
It orients the lipid panel. Clinicians usually read it beside LDL, HDL, triglycerides, and ApoB rather than as a stand-alone risk score.
When it reads low
A low reading can appear with malnutrition, malabsorption, hyperthyroidism, or certain medications. Context from the rest of the panel matters more than the single value.
When it reads high
A high reading can reflect diet, genetics, thyroid status, or metabolic health. Particle number (ApoB) and LDL often add more decision value than the total alone.
Questions for a clinician
01
How should this total be read next to my LDL, HDL, triglycerides, and ApoB?
02
Could thyroid status, medications, or collection timing be affecting it?
03
Does this change any follow-up interval, or is the particle count the priority?
