Definition

What Triglycerides measures

Triglycerides are the main form of stored and circulating fat. The fasting value reflects recent intake, alcohol, insulin action, and how the liver packages fat into lipoproteins.

Why it matters

How clinicians usually read it

They link diet, alcohol, and insulin resistance to the lipid panel. High triglycerides also make some LDL calculations less reliable.

When it reads low

A lower value can mean

Low triglycerides can be normal, especially with a high-activity or lower-carbohydrate pattern. Very low values are rarely the primary concern.

When it reads high

A higher value can mean

High triglycerides can follow a recent meal, alcohol, insulin resistance, or certain medications. Markedly high values raise pancreatitis risk and need clinical review.

Questions for a clinician

Bring the number into a real conversation

01

Was this a true fasting draw, and did alcohol the night before matter?

02

How should triglycerides be read with my HDL, glucose, and insulin?

03

Does this change whether LDL was calculated or measured directly?
