Definition

What VIP measures

Vasoactive intestinal peptide is a regulatory neuropeptide. In Shoemaker protocols it is measured as a baseline and again around VIP nasal therapy.

Why it matters

How clinicians usually read it

It is a frozen specialty assay. The protocol also requires lipase and an in-clinic first dose — none of that fits a Tasso+ kit.

When it reads low

A lower value can mean

A lower VIP is a common CIRS pattern and is one of the later protocol targets, not a first-step DIY treatment.

When it reads high

A higher value can mean

A higher VIP is closer to the published control band. It is still read with MSH, C4a, and TGF-β1.

Questions for a clinician

Bring the number into a real conversation

01

Are the earlier protocol steps done before we talk about VIP therapy?

02

Do we have a baseline lipase with this VIP?

03

When should VIP be redrawn after a treatment step?
