How clinicians usually read it
It is the fastest-moving line of the blood count: a snapshot of current immune activity that frames whether other findings are happening in a quiet or activated state.
When it reads low
A lower value can mean
A lower count can be a normal personal baseline, a viral-illness after-effect, or medication related. Persistent or marked lows deserve clinical review.
When it reads high
A higher value can mean
A higher count usually reflects infection, inflammation, stress, or smoking; steroids also raise it. Repeating after recovery separates a spike from a baseline.
